Why We Love Spangold Retrievers

Adult Characteristics:
Full grown, they usually weigh between 45–65 pounds, with a medium-athletic frame. They carry the silky, feathery coat of the Golden mixed with the field-marked patterning of the Springer, which makes them stand out. They’re built for stamina—strong enough for long hunts, yet light enough to move with agility.

Love for Family:
This is not a dog that just “likes” its family—it adores them. They crave closeness, shadowing their people from room to room. A Spangold isn’t a breed that’s happy being left alone for long stretches; it wants to be in the heart of the action. Their loyalty runs deep, and they tend to bond especially hard with children, often becoming their self-appointed guardian.

Hunting Ability:
This mix is a bird hunter’s dream. The Springer’s flushing instinct and the Golden’s steadiness combine beautifully. They’ll quarter fields tirelessly, nose to the ground, then shift into patient retrieval mode with a soft mouth. For upland birds and even waterfowl, they bring drive, endurance, and a natural eagerness to please in the field. You don’t have to push them to work—they want to work.

Good with Kids:
Spangolds are almost tailor-made for family life. They’re playful without being reckless, gentle but not timid, and endlessly patient. They’ll let kids climb, cuddle, and tug (within reason) without complaint, and when playtime is over, they’re happy to crash on the couch beside them.

As a Family Pet:
This is where they really shine. A Spangold is the “all-around dog” most people are searching for but don’t know exists—outdoor adventure buddy one moment, devoted lap companion the next. They’re highly trainable, intelligent, and eager to please, which makes them less frustrating than more stubborn breeds. With consistent exercise, mental stimulation, and family involvement, they become the kind of dog that feels less like a pet and more like another family member.

Spangold Retrievers (English Springer Spaniel & Golden Retriever) are the perfect mix! They make excellent family dogs! They are extremely gentle and great with children! Spangold Retrievers inherit many qualities from the Golden Retriever as it is a caring dog that will always stay by your side!
